Tobias Wolff is a well established author and multi award winner, with the books and short stories In the Garden of the North American Martyrs, Back in the World, The Night in Question and Our Story Begins which won him the Story prize in 2008. He also won the PEN/Malamud Award and the Rea Awards which were due to his excellency in writing short stories.

Growing up was not all fun and games for him due to him having to constantly relocate with his mom after his parents got divorced. Once he got to Seattle, Washington he and his mother stayed there where she later remarried. Later in life Wolff attempted to attend the Hill School in Pennsylvania until he was expelled for repeated failures in mathematics in his final year which influenced him to become a paratrooper for the Vietnam war. Afterwards he wrote the memoir In Pharaoh’s Army: Memories of a Lost War (1994) which was him describing his experiences in Vietnam through a fictional setting as well as The Night in Question (1996). After the war he continued his education at the University of Oxford (B.A., 1972; M.A., 1975) while maintaining many jobs like he worked variously as a reporter, a night watchman, a waiter and a high school teacher before receiving a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Creative Writing at Stanford University in 1975 and graduated from Stanford University with a (M.A., 1978). He was then appointed writer in residence at Syracuse (New York) University, where he taught from 1980 to 1997
